How to Start a Catering Business
If you love to cook, then a catering business could be right up your alley! You may be wondering how to start a catering business, and if so, read on!
It's important to determine exactly what kind of catering business you want to start. Will you focus on a specialty? A certain type of cuisine? Or is your business more general in nature? Think about the type of clientele you want to attract when deciding the type of food you want to offer.
The first thing you'll need is a location for your business. Many states require that your business location be separate from your home kitchen. You must be licensed, and in order to conduct a catering business, your location and equipment must meet all sanitation standards required by the Department of Health.
When it comes to equipment, things can get expensive. To make things more affordable, why not rent your equipment? There are many different places where you can rent all the equipment you need to successfully start your business. Then when you start making money, you can purchase your own equipment if you choose.
Make sure to get plenty of insurance before advertising your business. In the world of food service, insurance is simply a must. The last thing you want is a lawsuit from a client who gets ill and blames your food. Even if it's not your fault, you could end up paying an extravagant amount of money and risk losing your company.
Another thing you may need to think about is hiring employees. Always screen applicants thoroughly and make sure they're experienced in food service before considering them. The last thing a new business owner needs is the hassle of dealing with unqualified employees.
Finally, you'll need to advertise! There are a variety of ways you can get the word out about your catering business. To start, try a listing in your local Yellow Pages and a print ad in your local newspaper. These methods will most likely garner you a nice starting client base. As your business grows, you will be able to afford more expensive advertising methods such as radio and television.
Starting a catering business can change your whole life. Before beginning such an undertaking, make sure it's what you really want to do. There's a lot of hard work involved, but it can really pay off. If you love to cook and love dealing with people, then a catering business could be the perfect business for you!
