Some stock photographers specialize in certain images. For example, you might only deal in photos of animals. Or maybe, nature scenes are your specialty. Basically anything you like to photograph can be sold as stock photography.

Another option for your photography business involves working for clients. This could mean taking family portraits, senior pictures or wedding photographs. This type of photography is perfect if you like dealing with the public. Also, you can make a substantial income this way. Professional photographs aren't cheap, and what you should charge will depend on your area and the type of packages that you offer.

Regardless of which type of photography business you'd like to start, you'll need the proper equipment. Basic equipment would include a professional grade camera, tripod, film, and the means to develop the film. Many professional photographers use digital cameras and computers, while some still develop traditional film in a darkroom.

A photography business is more than just taking pictures. You'll need the right licenses to make sure that your business is legal. You'll also need a way to keep track of all your expenses and profits for tax and accounting purposes. If you're keen on doing this yourself, I recommend a money management software like Quicken.

Advertising is also a must when it comes to starting a photography business. You've got to find a way to let potential customers know about your service. You can try advertising in the Yellow Pages, which is where many people first look for a photographer. However, there are more innovative ways of advertising that can work, too. I've seen photographers that set up displays of their best work in the middle of crowded shopping malls. This is a great way to entice potential clients and show off your work.

Starting a photography business can change your life, and give you a way to earn your living doing something that you love to do. And isn't that what we all want for ourselves?
